It is cold on these american mornings
of little democracy
It is cold a malignant cold
like a crescendo of tentacles
always
invisible
almost
and at times like university students
[and sometimes even the literati
Of the C.I.A.
It is cold
in the abyssal interstices
Of americans for americans
It is cold
who turned out the light?
Is it you?
Who is there?
It is cold
getting increasingly colder
Afraid?
Those who are afraid buy a dog
An anti-communist dog

A "little" suggestion, Melissa: you might consider "meager" or "paltry" or something similar for "democracy". "Little" here seems to imply "tiny" instead of "few." "Petty democracy" might be too close to "petit bourgeois". Also, as suggested in class, "cold/getting colder" and "get a dog; then maybe "anti-commie" dog, since that was the vernacular of the time. Just some ideas. Bem feito, meia-brasileira!
